Partner Description

Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), formerly Istituto Trentino di Cultura, was created in 1962 as a public research centre of the Autonomous Province of Trento (Italy). FBK strives for scientific excellence, innovation and technology transfer to companies and public services. FBK's primary activities are centred upon advanced computer science, microelectronics, physics, mathematical sciences and human sciences. FBK has more than 350 researchers and developer to provide experimental evidence for the market, cultural growth and social welfare. FBK has launched more than 20 spin offs in recent years and is part of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, the EIT ICT Labs: Trento is one of the six co-location centres of the EIT ICT Labs, together with Berlin, Paris, Helsinki, Stockholm, and Eindhoven.

FBK will join the consortium with the 3D Optical Metrology (3DOM) unit which has expertise in 3D mapping and cartography, reality-based 3D surveying (photogrammetry, laser scanning) and modelling, data and sensor integration and 3D model segmentation. 3DOM has 9 researchers with background and expertise in photogrammetry, laser scanning, 3D surveying, computer science and geomatics.

Experience in related projects

FBK and its 3DOM unit are fully active and involved in 3D mapping, cartographic and GIS research problems. 3DOM is currently running a Concert-Japan FP7 project named “RAPIDMAP” dealing with the creation of geo-information in almost real-time in case of natural hazards. 3DOM is also involved with some photogrammetric companies for R&D projects. 3DOM just finished the “3D Solar Web” project (local funding) where a webGIS for assessing the photovoltaic potential of building roofs was generated, starting from detailed 3D city models and high-resolution orthoimages.

Brief description of the role within the project

FBK will contribute to WP1 in through general publications and dissemination. In WP02 FBK will play a key role in the identification of all the innovation and scientific aspects for a scientific and applied research agenda. A quite important role will be played by FBK in WP03 (education and training plan) and WP04 (market and success factor analysis).
